CHAPTER TWELVE

I’d barely climbed out of my car when Bree grabbed me. “Finally, you’re here.” She pulled me into a hug and did one of those side-to-side rocks people gave you when it had been years since they’d seen you. “I’m glad you’re all right.”

Crap. That didn’t sound good. When I was finally able to pry myself from her hold, I grabbed my bag from the passenger seat and closed my car door.

I’d been tempted to take the Harley this morning, but my brain had been working today, so I’d done the right thing and left it home. I was also planning to give it back. There was no way I was going to join Milo’s motorcycle club, but after the kiss with Dominic, I could barely look at any of them.

“I’m so glad you’re here.” Bree grabbed my arm again as if to make sure I was real.

“You’ve been blowing my phone up all morning. What’s wrong?”

She looked distressed. “We need to talk about last night.”

Last night was the last thing I wanted to talk about. I was guessing she’d heard about what happened at Al’s. My emotions were all over the place. “I’d rather forget it.”

“You have no choice. There’s an assembly going on about it right now.”

My mouth dropped. When I’d said any further embarrassment could happen tomorrow, I hadn’t meant it. “An assembly? It wasn’t even that big a deal. Nothing happened. The kiss wasn’t long, and Lukka and Dominic just stared one another down.” Unless something happened after I left.

Crap. I should have stayed and made sure one of the men left before I did.

Bree’s anguished gaze turned to astonishment. “What are you talking about? You kissed someone? Who?”

“Wait. What were you talking about?”

“The murder.” Bree frowned. “Poor girl.”

All of my problems fled. They were minute compared to what a dead girl had gone through. “Who died?”

“I don’t know.” She started down the sidewalk. “They haven’t released a name yet, but I heard they found her on campus with her neck ravished.”

A chill went through me. Only one creature could have done that. “Could it have been a knife?”

“Black Serenity said it was definitely vampires.” Since this information was coming from Bree, I believed her.

There was a deafening silence over the campus. Though a storm hadn’t blown in last night, it seemed the darkness of last evening clung in the air. The wind blew and rustled the leaves of the trees while the dense clouds covered the entire sky.

Someone I’d gone to school with was dead. Fear gnawed at my chest. “Where’s Sofia?”

“She’s fine,” Bree said. “She’s already at The Hall, saving us seats.”

Black Serenity was out again, passing out flyers, this time with a somber expression. The flyers were about the mandatory meeting. Breathing got easier the closer we got to The Hall of Transcendence and took the biggest breath when I saw Sofia for myself.

I gave her a rock hug because I needed it.

Sofia was crying. “This is terrible.” The murder was affecting her hard.
